Venus Williams: Artist of the Week

Updated: Jul 29, 2020

Hello and welcome to our blog. We are excited to announce the amazing artwork of Venus Williams and we are delighted to have her as our first Artist of the Week.

Artist of the week is a free promotion opportunity we give to artists to use Oddball Space as a platform to share their work. Venus is currently studying a BA in Fine art, currently focusing on portraiture. We were drawn to the way she expresses herself through the use of different media. She continues to develop her work, pushing herself to experiment with new mediums. She is very talented and we wish you would give the time to read more about her and check out her work @vnus.art.

Describe your artwork in one sentence.

I would describe my work as a mix of abstract art and Afrofuturism.

What is your current artwork about?

The meaning behind my current artwork is to portray self-embracement and self-love. My work is about accepting and appreciating your own identity.

What media do you mostly use?

I mostly use oil and acrylic paints; however, I have recently been experimenting with digital painting which has become my new favourite way to create.

What projects have you recently completed?

I have completed a few projects - I recently completed my first commission, which was a really exciting and proud moment for me.

What projects are you looking to do next?

As I enjoy digital painting, I really want to practice my animation skills and focus on increasing my knowledge of this.

What is your favourite thing about your own art practice and why?

My favourite thing about my practice is that I feel like my artwork reflects my personality and who I am as a person. I feel at peace when I look at my finished work.

We saw that you were using animation in your art. How has this impacted your art practice? Is it something you plan to use more moving forward?

I always like to experiment using different media, thinking how I can push my work further than ‘just a painting’, which is why I wanted to explore animation. I feel like this is good to create a narrative to my work. I still have a lot more to practice and learn, but it’s something I’m looking forward to hopefully excel at. I definitely plan on using this more in my work and I already have so many exciting ideas of what I could create already.

We at Oddball Space find that it is great that an artist can explore themes of Afrofuturism and promoting ideas of self-love which we believe is an important message to send.

We look forward to seeing how Venus progresses in the future.
